The best domain names are the Waterfront Property of the Internet

Much like Real Estate good domains are becoming harder and harder to find. After all they are “internet” addresses. We will see domains passed on as family and company heirlooms.

The best domain names are:

  • Short
  • Meaningful
  • Easy to spell
  • Easy to remember
  • Easy to say and understand when heard

The best domain names fall into a few categories:

  • Single Word Domain Names – the best, but hard to find. Homes.com is an example.
  • 4-letter and Shorter Domain Names – shorter is better, but they may not be meaningful. TREG.com is an example. Although an acronym for The Real Estate Guide, unless you went to the site or knew the company it is unlikley to have meaning to the average person.
  • Two-Word Meaningful Domain Names – while not short and simple, if they are definitive, they may still be good. WASTEMETHANE.COM is an example.

Other names, like eLawyer or MyLawyer, are not as good because they have no meaning outside of themselves. To get people to remember them and to pass them along is a costly job.

Dot Com (.com) and Top Level Domain Extensions

You are no longer restricted to .com names. There are now a number of good domain name extensions, such as .info, .biz, .ws, .net and others. A good domain name in any extension, is better than a weak domain name in .com.

However, if the names are the same, .com domain names can still have a market value of 10 times other extensions and in some cases 100 times. The reason for this is many people still have their web browsers set to default to the .com version of a name. So, if a person types in “calendar”, the web browser will go to “calendar.com”. If you have a .com name that people guess at, this can be worth a good amount.

Single word domain names are the prize of the Internet and of great practical value. They are the easiest for your visitors to identify with, remember and spell correctly.

A search for “classical” is interesting. Out of 476 million hits, classical.net comes up number one and classical.com number three. You can see just how much of an advantage a single word domain name is.

Search engines keep their page ranking algorithms a secret, so no one knows for sure how you can get ranked number one. However, these seem to be among the main criteria.
