What is a feed?
Feeds, also known as RSS feeds, XML feeds, syndicated content, or web feeds, contain frequently updated content published by a website. They are usually used for news and blog websites, but are also used for distributing other types of digital content, including pictures, audio, or video. Feeds can also be used to deliver audio content (usually in MP3 format) which you can listen to on your computer or MP3 player. This is referred to as podcasting.

How do I view a feed?
When you visit a webpage, the Feeds button Picture of the Feeds button will change color, letting you know that feeds are available. Click the Feeds button, and then click the feed you want to see. To get content automatically, you should subscribe to a feed. For more information on Web Slices, see Web Slices: frequently asked questions.

How do I subscribe to a feed?

1.      Open Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari or Chrome Feedburner or Google reader
2.      Go to the website that has the feed you want to subscribe to.
3.      Click the Feeds button Picture of the Feeds button to discover feeds on the webpage.
4.      Click a feed (if more than one is available). If only one feed is available, you will go directly to that page.
5.      Click Subscribe to this Feed.
6.      Type a name for the feed and select the folder to create the feed in.
7.      Click Subscribe.

How does a feed differ from a website?
A feed can have the same content as a webpage, but it’s often formatted differently. When you subscribe, the web broswer automatically checks the website and downloads new content so you can see what is new since you last visited the feed.

Does a feed subscription cost money?
No, it’s usually free to subscribe to a feed.

How can I view my subscribed feeds?
You view feeds on the Feeds tab in the Favorites Center. To view your feeds in Internet Explorer 8, click the Favorites button, and then click Feeds.

What does RSS mean?
The acronym RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is used to describe the technology used in creating feeds.

What formats do feeds come in?
The most common formats are RSS and Atom. Feed formats are constantly being updated with new versions. Most Browsers supports RSS 0.91, 1.0, and 2.0, and ATOM .3, 1.0 . All web feed formats are based on XML (Extensible Markup Language), a text-based computer language used to describe and distribute structured data and documents.

FFA and Link Farms

FFA sites (Free For All) are web pages that include a link to the website you just point free. But it has two drawbacks:

1) Usually you have to register or provide personal information. Many of these sites sell the email addresses to companies that then spam your inbox.

2) Google is penalizing these FFA sites and links from them are not taken into account. In addition, there are often hundreds of links per page, and Google does not usually consider pages with more than 100 links.

Moreover, the ‘link farms’ (link farms) are usually created by businesses to sell links from their websites. Google usually detected and penalized, as these pages have little content and lots of links to other websites artificially trying to boost their rankings.

A website that has some content, but that his goal is not to communicate but to create links to other pages to promote them in search engines. It’s called a “link farm” because it merely serves to create links to other sites and expand its page rank.

The pagerank (PR) is a system that Google uses to measure the importance of a page. The Google PageRank and Google PageRank assigns a value between 0 and 10 to each page, the higher this value, the more important the page.
To assign this value, Google developed an algorithm, which has shifted over time, based on incoming links (backlinks) to a site. It is like a voting system where each site linking to yours is giving you a vote. The higher the pagerank of the site that links you, then more “weight” has the vote. The more sites linking you more votes you have and the higher the value of the Google pagerank of your site.

It is important to note that not all incoming links (backlinks) are taken into account by Google, especially those from sites devoted exclusively to put links, such as call link farms or link farms (link farms), or web rings ( webrings).
Google is aware that nobody can control inbound links (backlinks) pointing to a site, but it is possible to control the outgoing links (outlinks). It is also important not to confuse the pagerank bar gray with white. One page has a pagerank of 0 when the bar is completely white, however, sometimes appears gray bar, which indicates that Google still has not assigned a value of pagerank for that page.

Ping.fm is a super tool that allows you to post to multiple Social networks and Blog services at once. Either through their interface or via email. So instead of say, updating your FaceBook status, then logging into Twitter and updating there too, you can update all at once. Ping.fm has recently added some great new features. here is the tool in a nutshell.

After you register you will be taken to the dashboard for the first time. You will notice a list of common social networks and micro-blogs on the left. You will notice that Ping.fm now asks you to select a ‘Method’ when creating a trigger. Methods allow you to specify what sort of post you are making. The three options are, Status Updates, Micro-Blog and Blog Post. This feature makes it possible to update only your status messages across all your networks, or post a blog article to all your blogs without posting to your Micro-blog at the same time for example.

Let’s say for this example I want to update my status messages across several networks. I simply select the “Status” Method and create my trigger.

The next screen will let you choose from your available social networks. When you set up a particular service from the dashboard, you have an opportunity to specify what methods you want that service to be a part of, so if the network you want to post to isn’t showing up, double check that the appropriate boxes are checked.

5. Posting

I want to update all my blog services at once using the default trigger. Here is what that would look like:

As you can see, the “^” is used to separate the Post title from the body of the post and the “@b” is the default trigger for the Blog posting method.

WordPress SEO Tip #2  Use Pretty Permalinks

Sure, you may already use Pretty Permalinks, but are you using the best possible permalink structure?

For those of who dont use Pretty Permalinks, its a must-do for WordPress SEO. Permalinks, in essence, are the URLs of your WordPress blog posts. Pretty Permalinks put slugs (which should contain keywords  see tip #9) in your URLs instead of the default numbers.

To enable or change them, first login, then go to Options > Permalinks.

The two options you do not want are Default and Numeric. Here are my suggestions for picking a pretty permalink structure:

* Date and Name Based: The problem with this is that your posts are several extra directories deep, which can decrease relevence in some search engines. However, such a permalink structure can nevertheless be desireable if your blog is news-oriented or date-sensitive.
* Post Name Only: If your blog covers one topic that has no subtopics (which, though possible, is unlikely), select Custom and type /%postname%/
* Category Based: If your blog covers multiple topics, implement category-based URLs. (You have to look into the Codex to find information on category-based URLs, so many WordPress users probably dont realize that this option exists!) To implement it, select Custom and type /%category%/%postname%/
